Bean Statement on Iran War Powers Resolution
WASHINGTON—U.S. Congressman Aaron Bean (FL-04) released the following statement after voting down H. Con. Res. 38 War Powers Resolution, which limits the President’s authority to conduct further military operations against Iran.
“Iran is an evil, barbaric, and ruthless regime that has waged five decades of terror. President Trump, as the Commander in Chief, has an obligation to protect American troops and assets in the region. Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons threatens the United States and our allies, and limiting the President’s military options at this critical moment would embolden our adversary and increase the risk to American lives and our national security.”
BACKGROUND
The President has the authority to conduct these strikes under Article II of the Constitution.
Secretary Rubio notified House and Senate leadership before the strikes, and the Administration has held classified briefings for every member of Congress.
Under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, the President must notify Congress within 48 hours of deploying troops. The law allows the President to take military action initially but requires congressional authorization if hostilities continue beyond 90 days.
Additionally, Congressman Bean voted in favor of H. Res. 1099, reaffirming that Iran remains the largest state sponsor of terrorism.
