Recovery Tips: Avoiding Hazards and Staying Safe
- Never use a wet electrical device. Turn off the power at the main breaker in your house if the device is still plugged in. Wait for an electrician to assess the device before using it.
- If the power is out use a flashlight instead of candles. If you have to use candles, keep them away from anything flammable. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and make sure you know how to use it.
- Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from use of generators, pressure washers, charcoal grills, and camp stoves. You can’t smell or see carbon monoxide, but if it builds up in your home, it can cause sudden illness and death.
- Stay away from downed power lines. Watch for lines that may be hanging overhead, stay clear of lines on the ground, and be sure to report downed lines to your utility provider.
- Protect yourself from animals and pests. Use insect repellant and wear long sleeves, pants, and socks when outside, especially in areas of standing water. Stay away from wild or stray animals after the storm and report them to your local health department or animal control office.
- Drink safe water and eat safe food. Throw away any food that has been stored in excess of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two hours.
- Clean up your home safely. Make sure to consult proper authorities before cutting down branches or removing debris.
